Spotted-tailed quoll

The spotted-tailed quoll (formerly called "tiger quoll" or "tiger cat" and also known as "spot quoll" or "spotted quoll") - Dasyurus maculatus - is the largest of Australia's four species of quoll. It is found on the eastern seaboard from Queensland in the north, right through to Tasmania in the south.

Two quoll species were historically distributed on Australia's east coast in recent times - the spotted-tailed quoll and the Eastern quoll. The Eastern quoll is believed extinct on mainland Australia but persists on the island state of Tasmania. Despite this, there are occasional sighting reports for Eastern quolls on the mainland. Given the similarity between these two species it is important to have an understanding of the differences between them - from anatomy to behaviour.
