What is the use of the long tail of thylacine?

Images and film footage showing poses such as this one show that the tail can be used for balance while the animal rears.

Additionally, many marsupials store fat in their tails. When you see images of thylacines with very thin tails and rumps, this is suggestive the animal is in poor health.
